Magical Evening at the Montrose Dunes.
A couple of months ago, Rachel, Kat and I sat around the Fins dinner table and dreamed up a vision for the all-senses shoot that was inspired by an art exhibit that Kat had seen in Arizona. There were talks of simplistic and whimsical design, golden hour, fleurs, good eats & good company. A night that engaged all of your sense entirely, that would be captured by the Loewens. A night where all of the different creative outlets that Rachel, Kat and I are passionate about would be combined to create a vision that we had in our heads.
This all-senses shoot was the recipe for a perfect evening- and I was able to envision and execute the hair portion of the design of the night. Immediately braids, flowers, curls, and updo's were on my mind. I spent the time between our creative meeting and the day of the photoshoot looking up inspiration, trying to complete the vision that I had for the styles that I would create. As we spoke more about colors, what we would wear, the natural light, the fleurs, I began trying to envision what would truly complete the look on the ladies for the evening. I envisioned romantic, whimsical styles and I was lucky enough to have two ladies with the perfect hair to create the overall look.
The most beautiful thing about the styles done on Kat and Rach is that they were done organically, I had inspiration but I did not have a photo I wanted to replicate. At one point Kat asked, "Where will the flowers be in my hair?" to which I replied, "You know, I actually don't know where I'm going with your hair, I'm just listening to where it wants to go and creating something that looks natural and beautiful." It's rare that I get to have two ladies with gorgeous hair sit and let me create a style that's entirely being created as I go- with no huge expectations and truly I think that's what enabled me to create such beautiful hair.
The evening couldn't have been more dreamy, seeing our vision come alive was truly a gift. Every single aspect of the photoshoot came alive and flowed together perfectly. The moment we walked into the Dunes and found the spot we would set up our eyes all lit up, we couldn't stop smiling. The spot was perfect and the light was golden. Kat created the most beautiful spread of food, a table that truly looked like it was out of a dream, a menu and name cards that were so beautifully crafted. From the moment we chose the spot and started creating the space to sit and enjoy the evening Rachel was snapping photos and capturing moments, its truly beautiful to see her do her thing- but what I most loved was seeing her be completely present and involved in the moment while capturing it all from behind the lense,
Rachel and Kat's husbands, The Andrews, joined us for the night. It was definitely our vision and we were throwing them into it, I didn't quite know what to expect from them- would they feel dragged along, just going with it? Or, would they be able to enjoy the evening as much as we would? I think on of my favorite moments was when they looked around and said, "This is actually pretty cool- nice job guys."
What makes the photos so beautiful in my eyes is how real they are. They perfectly capture 5 friends spending an evening together in a space that was created specifically for them, there was laughter, prayer, life talks, toasts and delicious food. I went home that evening with a full heart, I couldn't stop smiling. It was truly amazing to see so many creative outlets combine into one evening with people who are so close to my heart.
